Festivals in Bellaire, Michigan

Santa Claus & Mrs. Claus come to town

by Sally Barber, Demand Media

The tiny community of Bellaire, Michigan, marks seasons with creative community festivals year after year. Villagers bring together family, friends, neighbors and guests to celebrate the gifts of the season, resulting in this northwest Michigan village of roughly 1,000 swelling with visitors eager to join the fun. Its signature celebrations demonstrate Bellaire’s knack for engaging all ages in activities, mixing traditional events with a touch of whimsy and connecting with the natural beauty surrounding the town.

Every August, the folks of Bellaire devote five consecutive days to celebrating summer with the spirited Rubber Ducky Festival. Since 1987, the rubber duck has served as Bellaire's symbol of fair weather joy. The festival includes classic hometown events like a parade, live music, children’s activities, an arts and crafts show, a pancake breakfast and a picnic. The festival's highlight involves thousands of rubber ducks being dropped from a bridge spanning the Intermediate River for the annual Rubber Ducky Race down the waterway.

When frost is on the pumpkins it’s time for Bellaire’s Harvest Festival & Scarecrow Extravaganza. There’s friendly competition for bragging rights and honors in the scarecrow competition, heaviest pumpkin contest and a foot race. A pancake breakfast and cider and doughnuts bring people out for a taste of the season, while a flea market and craft show attract shoppers. Even the family pet is involved in the day-long festivities. Creatively costumed animals march through town in the Best Dressed Pet Parade.

The Light Up the Night celebration in early December ushers in the holiday season for tiny Bellaire. The day-long community party includes children’s games, caroling, a community tree lighting ceremony and a parade to welcome the arrival of Mr. and Mrs. Claus. Competition takes a silly twist with turkey bowling in which the traditional bowling ball is replaced with a frozen turkey. Local restaurants vie for first place in a soup cook-off. Festival participants have the chance to work off extra holiday calories in the 5K Elf Run through Bellaire streets.

Grass River Natural Area (, a 1,443-acre county-owned nature preserve in Bellaire, cures cabin fever with the annual day-long Grass River Shiver and Winterfest. River Shiver is a 5K and 10K snowshoe race held at the preserve. It also features a fun run for children and families. Winterfest gets into high gear following the race with free indoor and outdoor family activities like crafts and winter tracking lessons. Local chefs provide their top soup creations for the soup tasting event.
